Since the end of the sale of the jackets Steve and Robert, we are working thoroughly on several products. One of them is the "boots"!
Like last time, we have decided to offer you two iconic pieces from the men's locker room: the Chukka and the Chelsea.
In order to do our job properly, we had to research the subject. Here is a brief summary of the history of these two models.
CHUKKA BOOT
History
Chukkas boots have their origins in polo.
The word "chukka" refers to one of the periods that constitute a polo match. Indeed, this equestrian team sport, born more than 2500 years ago in Asia, is played in 4 to 8 periods called the "chukkas" or "chukkers".
There are several explanations as to why this term is used to refer to this form of footwear. The best known is that at that time polo players wore these shoes during matches. Evidence is hard to find.
The most likely would be the use of these shoes by players during their downtime and after games. The word "chukkar" in Hindi is used for peaceful walks.
So are chukkas the parents of polo boots? It's up to you! What's for sure is that they have a lot of interesting features that will be the subject of another article!
Their name and the many stories of polo lead us to believe that they were born in Asia and that they were notably worn in India in British army units. They are perhaps a more dressy derivative of the "desert boots".
The Duke of Windsor visiting India in 1924 played polo and reportedly brought back a few pairs. By wearing them regularly he helped to make this pair a must in the men's locker room.
Created to be comfortable and stylish, chukkas became very popular in the 50s!
